Coalition Demands NUC Sanction Content Creators Misusing “University” in Comedy Skits.

A growing coalition made up of academics, students, alumni, and concerned citizens has voiced serious concern over what they describe as the “misuse and misrepresentation” of the term “university” by social media comedians and content creators.

The group is now calling on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to take immediate regulatory action to curb the trend, which they say undermines the integrity and credibility of Nigeria’s educational system.

In recent times, a surge of online comedy content has introduced fictional “universities” like Gehgeh University, Street University, and others often characterized by chaos, criminal behavior, and unacademic conduct. While these skits are intended for humor, critics argue that attaching “university” to these portrayals trivializes the serious role of higher education and misleads the public, particularly younger audiences.

“Universities are sacred institutions built on academic excellence, discipline, and national development. It is unacceptable to watch the title get reduced to a punchline,” said one of the academic signatories.

The coalition insists that while comedy and content creation remain a vital form of expression, boundaries must be respected especially when it involves institutions that shape the future of the nation.

The NUC is yet to release an official response, but the growing pressure may lead to formal guidelines or even legal consequences for content creators misusing academic titles.
