A tragic and unusual incident occurred in the Osara, Obantoko area of Abeokuta, within the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, as no fewer than 32 cows were reportedly struck dead by lightning during a heavy downpour on Saturday.
According to eyewitnesses, the devastating event took place in the early hours of the afternoon when a sudden thunderstorm swept through the region. The affected cows, which belonged to local herders, were said to be grazing in an open field when a powerful bolt of lightning struck, killing them instantly. The shocking scene drew the attention of local residents and passersby, who gathered in disbelief as the lifeless bodies of the animals lay sprawled across the field.
Local sources say the thunderstorm was intense, with deafening claps of thunder and heavy rainfall, which reportedly lasted over an hour. The incident has left the herding community in mourning, as the loss of the livestock represents a significant economic setback for the affected families.
Authorities from the Ogun State Ministry of Agriculture and local government officials have since visited the site to assess the situation and offer support to the affected herders. Preliminary investigations confirm the cause of death as a lightning strike, a rare but naturally occurring phenomenon during severe thunderstorms.
Community leaders have called for spiritual cleansing and traditional rites to be conducted in the area, as many locals see the event as an ominous sign. Meanwhile, agricultural extension workers have advised herders to seek safer, sheltered areas for their livestock during heavy storms to prevent future occurrences.
