Nigerian singer and music executive Asha Gangali has officially stepped into a new era, rebranding himself as YoungOG and unveiling his latest single, titled "Ebube." The name change signifies a fresh musical direction and a deeper connection to the ever-evolving Afrobeats culture.
In a recent interview, YoungOG shared the motivation behind his rebranding and the inspiration driving his new single. He emphasized that his decision to transition to YoungOG is deeply rooted in his musical journey as an Afrobeats artist and his extensive involvement in the Nigerian music copyright landscape.
"My musical journey as an afrobeats artiste and decade-long activism in the Nigerian music copyright segment contributed to my transition into this new brand, which is an embodiment of the afrobeats culture," YoungOG explained. He sees this rebranding as a natural evolution, reflecting his commitment to innovation and his deep understanding of the Afrobeats genre.
YoungOG further elaborated on his unique perspective within the Afrobeats scene, stating, "I noticed that I’ve always been years ahead of any afrobeats dispensation. I am not trying to brag, but it’s the reality. That is why my sound is always fresh and dope. You’ll know and appreciate this when you listen to my new single and other forthcoming records." This confidence in his musical vision underscores his desire to push boundaries and offer a sound that is both contemporary and forward-thinking.
Addressing the specific reasons for the name change, YoungOG said, "Rebranding from Asha Gangali to YoungOG was necessary due to changes in the demographics that consume the music and drive the culture. My new sound is eclectic and I’m excited about this new dispensation. I had actually metamorphosed from Gangali to YoungOG since 2023 but the process of rebranding is very tedious, both creatively and administratively.” The new moniker, YoungOG, aims to resonate with a wider audience, particularly the younger generation who are shaping the current musical landscape.
Despite his renewed focus on his music career, YoungOG affirmed that he remains committed to his important work in the Nigerian Music Copyright space. Having served as National Treasurer of the Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), he has played a significant role in advocating for the rights of musicians and protecting their intellectual property. YoungOG's continued involvement in these organizations demonstrates his dedication to the overall well-being of the Nigerian music industry.
