D’Tigress Make History with Fifth Consecutive AfroBasket Triumph.

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have etched their names in the annals of African sports history by clinching their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title. In a commanding performance, they defeated Mali 78–64 in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday.

The victory not only extended their unbeaten run in the tournament to 29 games but also solidified their dominance in African women’s basketball. D’Tigress showcased resilience, overcoming a first-quarter deficit to outscore Mali 37–23 in the second half. Amy Okonkwo led the charge with a game-high 26 points, while Mali’s Sika Koné contributed 24 points in a valiant effort.

Under the guidance of head coach Rena Wakama, the first female to lead the team, D’Tigress have not only maintained their continental supremacy but also secured qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

President Bola Tinubu lauded the team’s achievement, praising their discipline, focus, and team spirit. He also commended Coach Wakama’s leadership, noting how her experience continues to inspire the team to new heights.
