Tragedy Strikes: Air India Flight 171 Crashes in Ahmedabad, Over 200 Feared Dead.

On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life. The aircraft, carrying 242 individuals—including 230 passengers and 12 crew members—plummeted into the Meghani Nagar residential area near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, causing widespread devastation.

Authorities have confirmed that at least 204 people on board perished in the crash, with only one known survivor, a British national who miraculously escaped the wreckage. The disaster also claimed the lives of at least five individuals on the ground, including students at B.J. Medical College, where the aircraft struck a hostel building. Additionally, 41 people sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Flight AI171 departed Ahmedabad at approximately 1:38 PM IST. Within minutes, the aircraft issued a mayday call before losing contact at an altitude of just 625 feet. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the plane struggling to gain altitude before it crashed into the densely populated area, igniting a massive fireball and sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky.

The passenger manifest included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. The diverse backgrounds of the victims have prompted international condolences and support.

Air India Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing it as a "tragic accident." He stated, "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event." An emergency center and dedicated support team have been established to assist families seeking information about their loved ones.

Indian Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda confirmed the high casualty figures and emphasized the government's commitment to providing support to the victims' families. Emergency response teams were promptly mobilized, and rescue operations are ongoing.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that the aircraft experienced technical difficulties shortly after takeoff. Notably, a passenger on the aircraft's previous flight documented severe technical malfunctions, including inoperative air conditioning and unresponsive cabin controls, raising concerns about the plane's condition prior to the crash.

This incident marks the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2011. Boeing has extended its condolences and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

Leaders from around the world have expressed their condolences. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer conveyed their deep sorrow over the tragedy and affirmed their governments' support for the affected families.

As the investigation continues, authorities are focused on uncovering the factors that led to this devastating event and ensuring that such a tragedy does not occur again.
