The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, June 6, and Monday, June 9, 2025, as public holidays to mark the annual Eid-ul-Adha celebration, one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar.
This announcement was made in a statement released on Monday in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. According to the statement, the declaration was made on behalf of the Federal Government by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
In his message, the Minister extended heartfelt congratulations to all Muslim faithful across Nigeria and in the diaspora. He called on the Muslim Ummah to reflect deeply on the true meaning of Eid-ul-Adha, which commemorates the unwavering faith and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (Peace be upon him). He emphasized the importance of embracing the spirit of sacrifice, faith, and devotion, urging Muslims to use this sacred period to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in Nigeria.
The Minister further highlighted the ongoing reforms and initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, noting that these efforts are designed to rebuild the country and place it firmly on the path of sustainable progress and national development.
“As we celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, let us all remember the value of unity and the importance of collective effort in restoring Nigeria’s lost glory,” the minister said. He encouraged citizens of all faiths to support the administration’s mission to reposition Nigeria as a nation admired for its strength, resilience, and global relevance.
While wishing the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid celebration, Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged all Nigerians to promote peace and remain optimistic about the nation’s future.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the FESTIVAL OF SACRIFICE, is observed by Muslims worldwide to honor the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. The holiday is marked by special prayers, charitable acts, and the symbolic sacrifice of animals.
The declaration of these public holidays will allow Muslims across the country to observe the festivities with their families, friends, and communities.
